Microsoft Office 365 is a great subscription service that gives you access to Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and more, for an affordable price starting at $6.99 a month, or $69.99 a year. However, not everyone may have that much money to spend on that subscription. No need to worry though, as there are more than a few ways that you can get Office 365 for free. Here’s how.

Use Office 365 for free on the web

If you’re not willing to shell out your money for a subscription fee, you can still enjoy some basic editing functionalities of Office 365 right from your web browser. To get started, you’ll need to create a Microsoft Account by visiting this webpage. Once you’ve set up your account, you’ll have basic access to Office on the Web via Office Online.

At the Office Online main page, you’ll notice a list of apps which are available for you for free. The list includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Sway, Forms, Flow, and Skype. If you click on one of these Apps, it will launch in a new tab. Of course, the functionalities are limited, but simple tasks will work just fine. You’ll need to stay connected and online to keep working.

You can also “upload” any Office documents you have stored on your computer or downloaded to edit in any of the online apps. This is powered by Microsoft OneDrive, so uploading documents and editing online shouldn’t be a fully reliable solution for processor-intensive tasks like crunching numbers in Excel spreadsheets.

If you’re a student or teacher or work in a school, you might already be eligible to get Office 365 for free from your educational institution. This means you won’t need to purchase an additional Office 365 Home or Personal subscription.

To check your eligibility, you can check out this Microsoft webpage and input your @.edu email address. Next, choose if you’re a student or teacher. If you see a page that reads “You have an account with us,” then that means you’re eligible for free Office 365. Click the sign in link, and sign in with the email address and password (Office 365 information) provided to you by your school. Once logged in with your .edu, you can then head to this page and click the “Install Office” button on the top right cover of the screen.

If you don’t that page when inputting your email, then Office might not be available for free for you at your school. Your school’s IT professional can enroll and request for a free Microsoft Office 365 Education plan.

If Office online isn’t right for you, and if you can’t get Office from your educational institution for free, all hope is not lost. You can, indeed, enjoy Office 365 for free for one month by heading to this free trial page and signing up with your Microsoft Account.

Introduction: How to Install Microsoft Office 2016 for Mac for Free

Microsoft has put out the free download of Office 2016 for Mac public preview, without any Office 365 subscription required. The new software includes support for Retina displays, iCloud syncing, and looks like the versions of Office currently available on Windows and mobile.

Step 1: Download the Install

Once you download the 2.6GB file to your downloads folder, click on the Office Preview Package to get started. You will be guided through the necessary steps to install this software.

Tip: I had to upgrade my OS X because you can't install Office for Mac with any version of OS X below 10.10. To see my tutorial on how to upgrade your OS X go here.

I also had some internet interruptions on my initial download to my downloads folder and had a hard time opening the package because it did not download the full 2.6GB. Make sure that you fully downloaded the package.

It includes its user interface in updated options that supports Retina Display and also uses ribbons. This is a complex application without mincing words. Step 2: Read and Agree to Licensing Agreement

You will then be prompted to agree. Once you do you will select what users of your computer will have access to the software to select the destination for install. You will need 5.62GB of free space to install. Select and click continue.

Step 4: Install Office for Mac

I want all users of my computer to be able to access Office and made sure to have the available space. Now I am ready to install. I click install. I had to wait a few moments for the installation to complete. Then I was notified that the installation was successful. And my installation is complete.
