(Solved) - Missing FIND and REPLACE dialog box

(9 posts)

Microsoft Word Mac Price

I am using MS Word 2007 (OS XP) and when I click FIND or REPLACE I don’t get a box that allows me to search or replace. My HOME text formatting menus grey out but no dialog box.

Any suggestions are most welcome. Oh, and thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi jlathem56

That is strange. Try running 'Diganostics' (Office orb/Options/Resources/Run Microsoft Office Diagnostics). This may find and fix the problem.

Did you try to click 'Ctrl + H' ????
If the problem persists , try to repair your office installation using the CD.

Tried the Diganostics and it reported that it fixed 1 problem but this wasn't the fix it made. Will try the repair option from the installation CD.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will repost and let you know my progress.

I did try the 'Ctrl + H' but Word responded the same as clicking the FIND on the menu. I will try to run the repair option. I may have to report back tomorrow as I think my CD is in my office software drawr.

I am now at my wits end. I have tried running the repair and it didn’t work, I even tried uninstalling MS Office 2007, rebooting 3 times, and reinstalling it but that didn’t work.

I even uninstalled it again, uninstalled all other MS Office components (there were some stragglers of office 2003 still in the system) as well as office internet components, rebooted 3 times, and reinstalled Office 2007. Then allow the system to run all required updates and tried it again but I am still not getting the popup box for Find / Replace. I click Find or press 'Ctrl + F', 'Ctrl + H', or 'Ctrl + G', and all I get a short pause like Word is going to give me the box. It also Grays out the text formatting options on the ribbon but I get nothing else.

Any suggestions?

Hi jlathem56

I would guess that the problem is somewhere deep inside your registry. Try booting into safe mode to see if the problem still persists. Other similar problems that I've seen would suggest that this might reset some of those entries.

Other than that, you might try uninstalling with Revo uninstaller in Advanced mode. Revo is very good at rooting out and deleting registry entries.

Beyond that a clean re-install of your OS may be required.

Hey guys,

If you get this message I want to thank all of you that took the time to help me out.
And I really feel stupid to have gone through all the uninstall, cleaning of the orphaned files, rebooting, reinstalling, tracing down and trying to reset Windows CP shortcuts, resetting Word shortcuts, and doing it all over again. Just before I decided to find wipe the OS and do another OS install I find a posting that was similar. This person lost their box but found it in his extended desktop.

What had me really puzzled was that the CTRL + F or invoking the find from the menu worked in all other Office products just not Word. Also once invoked I could type something and press enter and Word would find it even though I couldn’t see the box.

I hooked a second monitor up and set the desktop to extend and as you probably guessed it, I found the box.
Thank you again for all your suggestions and help.

Take care,
J Lathem
